When considering sustainable building materials, sourcing locally in Britain not only reduces carbon footprints but also supports traditional craftsmanship and local industries. Here are our five top British sustainable building materials, perfect for eco-conscious construction and particularly relevant for those seeking environmentally friendly wood flooring solutions.

British Hardwood - Oak, Ash & Chestnut

British hardwoods, including oak, ash, and chestnut,  are prime examples of sustainability in building materials. Locally sourced and certified by Grown in Britain, these hardwoods are both renewable and durable when bought from Coppice & Crown. With minimal transportation impacts and a strong ability to sequester carbon, using British hardwood helps reduce the environmental impact of construction. These woods also promote biodiversity by supporting local forestry. Their natural beauty and strength make them ideal for wide board wood flooring, like the solid flooring crafted by us here at the mill, as well as for use in structural beams, cladding, and bespoke furniture.

Lime Mortar and Lime Plaster

Lime has been a staple in British construction for centuries due to its sustainability and local availability. It requires minimal energy to produce and allows buildings to breathe, effectively managing moisture and preventing dampness. Importantly, lime mortar absorbs carbon dioxide as it sets, making it a carbon-neutral option. This material is ideal for masonry, walls, and external finishes, especially in heritage buildings or eco-homes aiming to reduce their carbon footprint. If you’re local to Devon, we’d really recommend using Heritage Cob & Lime for your project.

Sheeps Wool Insulation

A natural, renewable resource from the UK’s abundant sheep farming industry, wool is a highly sustainable material with excellent insulating properties. It is biodegradable and requires less energy to produce compared to synthetic alternatives. Wool insulation is not only environmentally friendly but also effective at regulating humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture. Its best uses are in roof, wall, and floor insulation, making homes more energy-efficient while maintaining a lower environmental impact. We used Thermafleece in our own Eco Storage Building, which was in turn nominated as part of the Wood Awards.

Straw Bale Construction

Straw is a by-product of British agriculture and is an extremely renewable building material. Straw bales provide exceptional insulation, making them a popular choice for low-carbon building projects. The energy-efficient properties of straw bales make them a sustainable option for eco-homes, where they are used primarily in walls and as infill material. Using straw reduces waste and supports a closed-loop agricultural system, contributing to an overall lower environmental impact.

Reclaimed Brick and Stone

Reclaimed materials like brick and stone from older buildings offer a sustainable solution by reducing the need for new extraction and minimising waste. British reclaimed brick and stone add character and historical value to modern construction projects while significantly lowering the embodied carbon associated with producing new materials. These materials are perfect for walls, facades, pathways, and garden features, all while contributing to a more sustainable building process.

Why Sustainable Materials Matter

Using sustainable timber materials not only enhances the aesthetic and durability of a home but also supports biodiversity and reduces environmental impact. Whether you’re installing wide board wood flooring or seeking other sustainable building materials, British hardwood is an outstanding choice for both beauty and sustainability.

By focusing on British materials, you not only contribute to sustainable construction but also support the local economy, reduce carbon emissions, and embrace the natural beauty and heritage of these materials.
